Beautiful

So I’ve been working on this post for 4 days now.  I usually don’t struggle with words, but I have been struggling with this one.  My mind is pretty much all over the place this week as I transition out of youth ministry and into the next phase of life… whatever that will be.

A little tidbit about me that you may not know.  I am a very slow processor.  I like to take time and think about things… roll them around in my head.  That’s why I love writing, because it gives me the time to think and really get out of my head what I want said.  My brain also continues to work on things even when I’m doing something else… like sleeping.  So it’s not uncommon for me to wake up in the morning with a blog or song idea in my head that is a bit of a surprise to me.

That happened this last week as within 15 minutes of waking up Saturday morning I was writing a song called “Beautiful”.

The night before I had gone to a store.  (I’m changing the story just in case the gal ever reads my blog.)  As I was waiting in line I, being a people watcher by nature, was observing the cashiers interactions with her customers.  She was probably in her late late 30’s, early 40’s, and she obviously took the time to make sure she looked good.  As I waited I saw her glance over several times into a mirror to make sure her hair looked good and it struck me as interesting.

It got me thinking about women, and how much of their life is spent in the pursuit of beauty.  They buy fashion magazines and the best hair care and make up products to always look their best. (Now some guys are like that… what is this world coming to?)  They even know how to stand when taking a picture so they look the best.

What is behind this never ending drive for beauty?  I mean… from my perspective, I like to have on clean clothes and don’t mind doing my hair… but really, who cares that much?  But as I thought about it I realized the overwhelming amount of stuff that media, TV, and Hollywood put out about beauty.  Then I thought about how many girls these days don’t have good home lives, and don’t know Jesus, and they are left to find significance through the place pop-culture says it exists… their looks.  And how that pursuit to be desired, to be known as beautiful often goes so much farther as they give away all the pieces of their life.  It breaks my heart that so many chase empty things in hopes that someone will tell them their are beautiful when the reality is they are the work of God’s hand and are more beautiful than they could ever imagine.

So, that’s what the work in progress song is about.  If you are a women reading this blog know that you are more beautiful than you could ever imagine, and that you were designed by the Maker of all.  May you find significance in his love, and know deep in your heart how amazing you truly are.

Beautiful

She sees in magazines bright colored dreams and promises of love
If she just looks that way, so she looks that way
She sees on movie screens the beauty queens all give it away
And she follows soon, and loses all she knew

Nobody told her that she’s beautiful
That she’s worth more than the birds that fill the sky and the stars that shine the night
Nobody told her that she’s wonderful
The amazing work of He who formed the world
Nobody told her that’s she’s beautifu

She sees in magazines bright colored dreams and promises of love
If she just looks that way, but she can’t look that way
She fades into the back to block the laughter haunting her ears
And she hides away, and loses all she knew

Nobody told her that she’s beautiful
That she’s worth more than the birds that fill the sky and the stars that shine the night
Nobody told her that she’s wonderful
The amazing work of He who formed the world
Nobody told her that’s she’s beautiful

She gives herself away in search of something more
And wonders why the steps she takes bring pain not joy
She thinks that beauty’s found within the eyes who see
He says that beauty’s in the eyes of Majesty

Know that you are beautiful
That you’re worth more than the birds that fill the sky and stars that shine the night
Know that you are wonderful
The amazing work of He who formed the world
Know that you are beautiful
